NGO plants 400 seedlings to avert drought

Winneba, (C/R) June 20, GNA - Youth as a Mission Development Association, (YAADMA) a non-profit Organisation, operating in the Effutu and Awutu-Senya Constituencies, has planted 400 tree seedlings towards averting drought at desertification, at Winneba. The seedlings of various species were planted at the Central Regional Police Training School and the banks of Monie Lagoon in Winneba.

The exercise, undertaken in collaboration with the Winneba District Forestry Service and Future Power Youth Club in Winneba, forms part of activities marking World Day to Combat Drought and Desertification. The seedlings include Acacia, Mahogany and Neem. The celebration under the theme: 93Let us Come Together and Save the Environment," was sponsored by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the exercise, Mr Daniel Baka, Executive Director of the Organisation, said the association operates in three thematic areas. They are community development, environmental issues/advocacy and health promotion, adding that, the exercise was to help reduce Global Warming.

Mr Baka stressed the need to protect trees and desist from other activities that destroy the environment, which could result in Climate Change.

Earlier, at a sensitization durbar in the town on Friday, the Very Reverend Eldad Bonney, Presiding Member of Effutu Municipal Assembly, appealed to Ghanaians to partner the government to take major steps towards saving the environment.
