NGO present computers to community

Wirenkyiren-Amanfrom, (E/R), March 30, GNA - The Community Development and Advocacy Centre (CODAC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO) based in the United Kingdom, has presented six computers and a printer worth 177 million cedis to the people of Wirenkyiren-Amanfrom in the East Akyem District. Presenting the items, Ms. Selina Oppong, Director, CODAC-Ghana with offices in Accra and Bolgatanga, on Saturday said the equipment would assist the people, especially the youth to acquire the requisite skills in information technology for the development of the area. The Director urged them to update their knowledge in computer technology and gave the assurance that the NGO would undertake micro-financing projects to eradicate poverty in the area.

Mr Ebenezer Abu-Bonsrah, the local chairman of CODAC, expressed gratitude to the donors for the assistance, which he said, would help enhance student's knowledge in information know-how. He said the NGO was established in 2002 with 90 members, comprising 50 women and 40 men. Mr Abu-Bonsrah said CODAC disbursed over 20 million cedis as micro-finance loans, with members receiving between 300,000 cedis and 100,000 cedis each for farming. He said the package had helped in boosting agriculture, particularly the cultivation of citrus and palm trees.

Mr Abu-Bonsrah said food production had also increased and cited that the farmers in the area had supplied enough gari to the Abuakwa State College. He urged beneficiaries to repay the loans early to enable other farmers avail themselves of the facility to expand their agriculture activities. In a speech read for him, Mr Victor Asihene, East Akyem District Chief Executive, said the assembly would support the training of instructors to handle the computers and provide an air-conditioner for the equipment room.
