NGO spearheads sanitation campaign in Yendi

Yendi, Oct. 7, GNA - The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Hudu Walvis, joined over 100 volunteers mobilized by the Yendi Collective Human Needs organisation, a local NGO, to weed the entire Yendi public cemetery. Mr. Walvis pointed out that people from Zabzugu/Tatale, Saboba, Chereponi, Gusheigu, Nanumba North and South Districts and other strangers who pass away at the Yendi government hospital are all buried at the Yendi public cemetery and there is therefore the need to always keep the cemetery tidy.

He therefore appealed to the youth, Imams, opinion leaders, religious bodies, Assembly members, and traditional authorities to get involved to ensure that the public cemetery is always kept clean. He told the volunteers that environmental sanitation is a factor that contributes to the health and productivity of the people, and should therefore be tackled with all the seriousness it deserves. The Director of Collective Human Needs Organisation (CHNO) Afa Mahamadu Alhassan, said the Organisation based in Yendi, is a charity non-profit making and non governmental organisation which is legally registered and which subscribes to the best of values and practices. Afa Mahamadu said the vision of the organisation is to reconcile and unite the people for social cohesion and development through voluntary activities.

He said the organisation has constructed a structure at the cemetery at the cost of GHc1,000 to store tools and other materials for digging graves and for materials.

He expressed the organisation's appreciation to Afa Muneru Ganu, Afa Suale Sulley of Tamale and Afa Mohammed Lion of Yendi for providing them with chemicals for spraying the weeds at the cemetery.

He said the organisation would not relent in its efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment but also expressed the need for the residents of the area to recognize that sanitation issues are a share responsibility which calls for all hands to be on deck.
