Cape Coast, Oct. 4, GNA - Mrs Cecilia Appiah, deputy executive officer, Fountain of Life Care International (FLCI), a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), operating in the Central and Western regions, on Monday echoed calls on parents to take keen interest in the education of their children to enable them to become responsible citizens.
She stated that children would become effective future only when they were assisted with their education and their talents developed. Mrs. Appiah made the call when the NGO presented school uniforms, bags and learning materials such as pens and exercise books worth two million cedis to 13 primary school pupils made up of orphans and the needy, at Abura, a suburb of Cape Coast. Mrs Appiah observed that the level of literacy in a country, determined the level of its development, and it was therefore the responsibility of all to contribute towards the nation's attainment of a high level of literacy.
She said it was in this regard, that the NGO, besides creating awareness and giving counselling on HIV/AIDS was also assisting orphans and needy children to attend school.
Receiving the items on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Suleman Adam-Sakyi, assembly member for the area, at whose instance the items were donated, expressed gratitude to the NGO for the gesture, and advised the children and their parents to take good care of the items. Ms. Jane Frances Anaman, headteacher of St. Lawrence School, where five of the beneficiaries attend school, appealed to philanthropists and other NGO's to assist more of the needy in her school. Mr. Ato Thompson, programme co-ordinator of FLCI also appealed for funding from other NGO's, organisations and philanthropists, to enable his organisation intensify its activities.
