NGO supports rural community children

The Nnyeka Youth Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) into education at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region has supported over 10,000 children in rural communities in Ghana to enroll in schools.

Madam Cecilia Fiaka, the Patron of the Nnyeka Youth Foundation made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at a recreational activity organised by the NGO for children at Afienya on Saturday.

She said the Foundation received recognition from the Ghana Education Service and started its programme three years ago in the Volta Region.

She said the Foundation has been going around the communities to make parents aware of the benefits of education and by extension, reduce school dropouts, teenage pregnancies and drug abuse among the children.

Madam Fiaka said in Afienya, in the Ningo-Prampram District, over 600 children have been supported to enroll in schools, while a number of rural community children in Volta and Greater Accra Regions have been assisted.

“The aim of encouraging children to be in school is to train them to become role-models in society and to help transform the nation.”

Madam Fiaka said the Foundation targets and supports rural children of age six to 16, especially girls, at least to reach the level of senior high school.

She said the organisation, with the support of Tigo and Cowbell, last year donated 60 bicycles to 10 schools in the Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region.
