Tamale, Nov 02, GNA - A Tamale-based NGO dedicated to providing humanitarian and development services to deprived communities in the Northern Region has initiated a programme to assist about 600 girls in the Gushiegu and Karaga districts to complete their basic education. Under the programme, the girls would be given bicycles, textbooks, school uniforms and other school materials.

Mr Seidu Abdul Samed, acting Programmes Manager of Regional Advisory Information and Network Systems (RAINS), told the GNA in an interview in Tamale on Wednesday that 300 girls from the Gushiegu District had been given bicycles.

RAINS has also distributed jerseys and footballs to 10 schools in the area worth about 20 million cedis. Mr Samed said RAINS sourced 27,000 dollars from the America Jewish World Service (AJWS) an NGO based in the US who are RAINS partners. He said communities in the two districts where junior secondary education is not accessible would be supported to ensure that the girls do not drop out of school.

Mr Samed said RAINS is helping to reduce family level poverty by supporting parents of needy girls to improve their living standards to ensure that their girls go to school.
