NHC expresses shock at President Mills’ sudden demise

The National House of Chiefs (NHC) on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow and distraught at the sudden death of President John Evans Atta Mills.

The chiefs said his demise was a big blow to the nation and conveyed their condolences to the people of Ghana, his wife and family.

Naa Professor John S. Nabila, President of the House, in a tribute read at their mid-year meeting in Kumasi, asked the people to stand together in these difficult times.

The death of President Mills should bring the nation together, he said, adding that “the greatest tribute we can pay to the memory of this great son of the land, so that his sacrifices shall not be in vain, would be to learn from his shinning example, and work together towards the continued peace, unity, stability and development of our nation.”

The chiefs called off their meeting in honour of the late President. Naa Prof. Nabila eulogized President Mills for his love for peace, calm disposition and respect for the rule of law.

“Since he was sworn-in as President in January 2009, he wanted so much, and worked so hard, to ensure the continued peace, unity, stability and most of all, the development of our country. We hope President Mills’ legacy of commitment to peace and stability to the people will endure. And we hope his honesty, humility and modesty will be shining examples to our current and future generation.”

Naa Prof. Nabila recalled the recent meeting of the Standing Committee of the House with the late President on June 29, 2012, to welcome him back home from his trip to the United States of America (USA) for medical check-up.

At that meeting, the President made good his pledge to the NHC and handed over a cheque for GH¢500,000.00 as seed capital towards the establishment of an endowment fund for the House. "Ghana has indeed lost a great statesman," he stated.

Naa Prof. Nabila also wished President John Dramani Mahamah the best of luck and good health to continue from where the late President left off.**
