NOBISCO dormitory damaged by heavy rains

Tamale Sept. 23, GNA - Heavy down pour in the Tamale Metropolitan Area this year, has caused extensive damage to the boys' dormitory of the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) in Tamale, depriving students of accommodation.

Water had filled the submerging building compelling the school authorities to convert the dining hall into a temporary accommodation for the students.

Mr Albert Atutiga, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the NOBISCO, said these to the GNA, in Tamale on Tuesday, after an emergency board meeting to discuss the development.

He said the situation would affect academic work and called on individuals, organisations and the government to come to the aid of the school.

Mr Atutiga said since the block with a weak foundation was built in 1974, it had never been renovated and expressed worry that the school had been neglected.

He said the board had decided to renovate the dining hall and some abandoned structures for temporary use as dormitory. Mr Atutiga said though the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly had promised to donate 5 million cedis towards the project it was woefully inadequate and appealed to the Parents Teacher Association to assist the school. When the GNA visited the school on Wednesday, students were busily parking their things to the dining hall while others were still using the dormitory.

There was a pool of water inside the building with huge cracks on the walls and the veranda was submerging.

Mr Mohammed Alidu, the Senior House Master, who conducted the GNA round said the entire block was a "Death Trap", unsafe for human habitation and called on the government to come to the aid of the school. He said the situation would compel school authorities to enrol few male students as boarders this year.
