NPP Regional Congress Held At Last

The Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Yeboah-Fordjour on Sunday retained his position unopposed at the Regional Delegates' Congress of the party held in Sunyani. Two other contestants for the position, Nana Obiri Boahen, a Sunyani Lawyer and Nana Osei Yaw Barimah, had earlier on Thursday announced their withdrawal from the race.

They explained at a news conference that their withdrawal was in the supreme interest of the party in the Region. The congress was postponed several times due to internal wrangling amongst members.

The position of First Regional Vice-Chairman was won by Nana Asamoah Mensah, a Businessman from the Asutifi South Constituency with 104 votes as against 11 by Agyapong Adu Baah, a Transport Owner from Kintampo.

Dr. King David Amoah, an Animal Scientist from the Atebubu North Constituency was elected unopposed as the Second Vice-Chairman while Anthony K. Kusi, the incumbent Regional Secretary was retained with 73 votes as against his rival, Mr Y. Addai Owusu, a Sunyani businessman.

Mr Eric Adu Marfo, a Financial Management Consultant at the Regional Education Office in Sunyani, was elected Assistant Secretary with 80 votes. He beat Abdul Karim Mamudu from the Asunafo North Constituency, who had 37 votes.

Mr Kwame Twumasi Awuah, a Legal Practitioner in Sunyani took the position of Regional Youth Organiser with 86 votes after beating Hamilton Kwabena Abekah, a Teacher in Sunyani, who had 31 votes.

Mr Francis Mensah Bonsu, a Contractor in Sunyani and Miss Felicia Appiah, a farmer and transport owner from Sunyani were voted Treasurer and Women's Organiser respectively.

The position for Regional Organiser was hotly contested by five candidates, but Kofi Darko from Sunyani emerged the winner with 85 votes as against Opoku Nyame, 13; T. K. Garbrah, 10; Kwame Baah Korang, five and Thomas Adu Appiah, four. Mr Dan Botwe, General Secretary of the Party swore the nine-member executive into office.
