A day’s sensitization workshop on safety to help significantly reduce road traffic fatalities in this year’s electioneering period has been held in Kumasi.
This comes on the back of the unacceptably high rate of political campaign-related road fatalities.
Available statistics show that more than 600 were killed during the 2012 election.
The workshop, which was held under the theme “Save a life, save a vote” was organized by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and brought together representatives of the various political parties.
Mr. Samuel Obeng Asiamah, the Ashanti Regional Manager the Commission, said the trend could not continue and that the politicians and their supporters needed to be more careful on the roads.
They should make sure that the people stayed alive to give them the votes.
He said the political party leaders should do more to help their followers to abide by road safety regulations as they criss-cross the various constituencies to win over voters.
He asked them to avoid speeding and reckless driving when attending and returning from political rallies.
They should also make sure that the party vehicles were in good condition with all the safety devices functioning before they were put on the road.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwaku Osei Ampofo Duku, the Deputy Regional Commander, said the police would continue to see to it that there was discipline on the roads to make them safe for everybody.
They would maintain strong presence and visibility to get motorists to do the right things.
