Accra, Oct. 31, GNA - The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), on Saturday organised a walk through some principal streets of Accra, to educate drivers on the need to take road safety regulations seriously to ensure that the roads were free of accidents. The walk, which forms part of the NRSC's 10th anniversary celebratio= ns, started from the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and ended at the Ministry of Transport.
Addressing the participants made up of stakeholders in road safety, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Victor Tandoh (Rtd), formally of t= he Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), praised the NRSC for its good wo= rks and urged all road users to take part in measures to ensure safety on the=
roads. He called for more education on the use of vehicles on the roads sin= ce the total number of vehicles in the country increased on daily basis. He said before 2004, there were only about 750,000 vehicles in the country but the number currently stood at over one million. ACP Tandoh praised the NRSC for establishing branches in all the ten=
regions and urged them to establish more for the betterment of all road users. Madam Mary Obiri-Yeboah, Director of Planning and Programmes, NRSC, condemned the high spate of accidents on the roads adding that most of t= hem were caused by human errors.
She urged drivers to take road safety regulations seriously and appealed to Ghanaians, especially stakeholders, to ensure that the roads were safe for all. "I will particularly advise drivers to always endeavour not to use th= eir mobile phones nor drink when driving. They should also learn to stop for our school children and mothers whenever they want to cross the road,'' she said. Madam Obiri-Yeboah said with effect from next year, commercial drive= rs who would want to renew their licenses would be required to produce certificates indicating that they had upgraded their driving experience f= rom accredited driving schools. "All these are some of the measures that we are putting in place to ensure that our roads are safe for all,'' she added. She said the anniversary celebrations which started on the 26th of October would end on November 6.
