Nadowli, June 10, GNA- The Nadowli District Assembly in collaboration with the District Directorate of Ghana Education Service on Friday rewarded 102 teachers for working in deprived areas and supported 100 needy students in the District at a total cost of 201 million cedis. The 102 teachers each received one and half packets of roofing sheets totalling 185 million cedis, while the 100 students each received a school bag, 10 exercise books, two pens and materials for school uniform all totalling 16.5 million cedis.

Presenting the items to the beneficiaries at Nadowli, Mr. Peter Gaa Jatoe, District Director of Education said the package was meant to encourage teachers to accept postings to the rural areas of the District and to support needy children to comfortably go to school to learn. He said although the District made it a policy to continue rewarding teachers in the district, it could not be so regular because of financial difficulties, but gave the assurance that they would work round the clock to sustain the programme. He said since the inception of the award scheme and support for the needy children in the district, coupled with the capitation grant, enrolment had risen up and commended the government for coming out with pro-poor programmes, which he believed would improve on education in the area.

Wing Commander (Rtd) Eric Dakurah, District Chief Executive explained that the gesture was to relieve poor parents of some of their numerous commitments in the communities and urged them not to hesitate to send their children to school. He said the Assembly in collaboration with other stakeholders in education would work hard to remove bottlenecks that impeded the education of children in the district. He warned parents against withdrawing their children for early marriages at the neglect of their education. The teachers and students were selected from various schools and communities throughout the Nadowli District.
