Kasoa (C/R), Feb. 3, GNA - The Director of the Andam Technical Training Institute at Kasoa, Mr Emmanuel Nkrumah Andam on Wednesday stated that the key to socio-economic development depended on the training of people with the requisite skills and competencies. He said to this regard, technical and vocational institutions would play a meaningful role and called for their proper founding for efficient performance of their functions.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Kasoa, Mr Andam said that technical and Vocational institutions required high calibre instructors to adequately train the youth on employable skills to help facilitate the development of the nation.
He called on the government to come out with a policy that would provide a good foundation for certain subject areas such as Mathematics, English and Science to ensure quality of skills acquisition in vocational and technical educational programmes.
Mr Andam said this should include standard of training, assessment and certification and the identification of levels in all programmes to attract more students to the tertiary education. He emphasized that most of these institutions were into dressmaking, carpentry, survey and joinery among others that have saturated the labour market with such skills.
Mr Andam stressed the urgent need for diversification of programmes to meet the required demands of the labour markets with regards to the pressing needs of such professions.
