Kumasi, Oct 8, GNA- Mr Solomon Kwabena Grantson, the National Best Teacher, has advised his colleagues to use instructional periods wisely to promote effective teaching and learning.

He expressed regret that some teachers engage in activities like unnecessary conversation with colleagues while others spend teaching hours doing lotto to the detriment of the children.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the award ceremony, Mr Grantson said some teachers do not examine the work of their pupils to ascertain their performances.

He attributed the falling standard of education to the attitude of some teachers especially those in the public schools who do not put in their best.

Mr Grantson said most teachers in the rural areas spend school hours working on their farms instead of teaching.

He said teachers face a lot of problems that make them to exhibit that kind of attitude and mentioned some of the problems as lack of adequate teaching and learning materials and incentives for teachers particularly those in the rural areas.

He advised teachers to work hard to merit the huge expenditure government puts in education and appealed to the government to provide accommodation for teachers and increase hospital bills from 25,000 cedis a year to an appreciable level.
