Ho, Sept. 11, GNA - The National Secretariat of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) on Wednesday presented relief items worth 16,000 Ghana cedis to inhabitants of five coastal communities displaced by tidal waves in Keta District.
The items included 50 bags of rice, 15 cartons of vegetable oil, dozens of plastic bowls, plates, cups, blankets and 10 bales of used clothing.
About 205 houses were allegedly washed away displacing about 1,605 people including 354 children in Atorkor, Akplorwutorkor, Dzita and Dakordzi communities.
Properties lost included personal effects, fish stock, cash, food and five boats.
Five boats and fishing gear worth 200,000 Ghana Cedis were also lost at Vodza in the sea defence wall area. Mr Kofi Dzamesi, Volta Regional Minister, presenting the items said Government was deeply touched by their predicament and would endeavour to support them.
He said the situation would be assessed to enable Government come out with concrete support and action to address the problem. Mr Edward Ahiabor, Keta Municipal Chief Executive said information from Ministry of Works and Housing hinted about the recurrence of tidal waves based on scientific observation and urged the people to be alert. The victims expressed appreciation to Government for the assistance.
