National Youth Authority (NYA) in collaboration with the Youth of Tagrayiri Electoral Area have cleared the streets of Wa of filth and desilted choked gutters in a bid to improve on sanitation and healthy living.
The clean-up exercise was also aimed at advocating a clean and healthy environment by ensuring healthy and good living among the people and to inculcate the spirit of volunteerism in the youth.
There was a procession with brass band as the exercise was going in the communities covering Bamabiyiri, Tagrayiri, Bomiyiri and Sundemuni that brought many people out their houses to participate in the exercise.
The Upper West Regional Director of NYA, Mr. Archibald Donkoh told the Ghana News Agency that the above communities were targeted because it had been listed as cholera and malaria prone and also declared as epidemic zones by the Ghana Health Service.
The dire situation prompted the assemblyman for Tagrayiri Electoral Area, Mr Ibrahim Baba, to seek a partnership with the NYA to help sanitize the area. “It is important to frequently engage the youth in such exercises to ensure clean environment and we should consider the issue of sanitation as a shared responsibility which we all have a major role to play,” Mr Donkoh said.
He said among other things pertinent to the authority, sanitation is one of its priority areas.
