Navrongo (U/E), March 31, GNA - The Member of Parliament (MP) for Navrongo Central Constituency in the Kassena-Nankana District of the Upper East Region, Mr. Joseph Kofi Adda, last Monday presented 45 borehole equipment with accessories estimated at 1.8 billion cedis to communities in the constituency to address the acute water shortage in the area. The MP directed that five of the borehole equipment should be sent to a sister constituency, the Paga-Chiana constituency to help address the people's water need.
Presenting the items, Mr. Adda said the package is his personal initiative with support from central government through the Ministry of Works and Housing, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) as well as funds from the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative. He noted that water is an essential commodity that is lacking in a number of communities in the constituency and said the presentation of the borehole equipment would address the annual ritual of acute water problems that confronts the constituents. He said contracts to start the drilling process have already been awarded and that work is expected to start soon, adding that every village in the constituency would benefit from the borehole project.
Mr. Adda said majority of the constituents are engaged in dry-season farming to make a living but that a number of the dams are silted, thereby giving room for most of the youth in the area to migrate to urban centers in search for jobs. To address the issue, the MP announced that plans are advanced to dredge eight irrigable dams to encourage the youth to venture into dry-season farming. It would also divert their attention from vices such as illicit drug use, teenage pregnancy and alcoholism.
The District Chief Executive, Mr. George Danyari, receiving the items thanked the MP for the gesture and said with such foresight, determination and commitment to bring relief to the people, one of the major hurdles of the assembly has been cleared. The DCE further commended the MP for extending the gesture to a sister constituency, adding that it depicted the level of unity and love the people in the district have for one another.
