Locating a Pack-House at Vakpo-New-Adomi creates a “window of hope” to direct a lot more of Ghana’s teaming youth into agriculture and agricultural related services, a businessman has said.
Mr Dan Acquaye, Executive Director of Agri-Impact, an agri-business and innovative solutions provider, told the GNA in an interview that the $2 million Agricultural Development Fund (ADB) funded project would bring the required linkage between the vast vegetable fields around the River Dayi and beyond with the growing urban markets.
He spoke to the GNA during a training of horticultural aggregators at Vakpo-New Adomi. Mr Acquaye expressed regret about “the very, very, low capacity” utilization of the Vakpo-New Adomi Pack-House and said A Pack-House was a complex in-door infrastructure, where vegetables are packaged to meet the various dainty standards of regulatory agencies across the world.
Twenty-six temporary workers of the Pack-House got certified to begin packaging mangoes for local and international markets. He said a developed production chain in the area from the fields to the Pack-House and the markets could make a huge impact on youth employment in the country.
Mr Acquaye said mango packaging in the Pack-House was normally between April and July and expressed worry that farmers in the area cropped mainly okro and garden eggs for the local markets.
