Nii Ashikwei Kwaobotswe II, a Kingmaker of Teshie, said the newly installed Teshie Mantse was committed to development to raise the living standards of the people.

Speaking on behalf of the chief, Gbets??l? Nii Ashitey Akomfra III, who was outdoored on April 14, 2016, Nii Kwaobotswe said the new chief had set up committees to handle cardinal issues in five thematic areas with support from his elders.

The areas are; Education and Development, Health and Sanitation, Poverty Alleviation and Wealth Creation, Cultural Modernisation, and Traditional Arbitration.

Nii Kwaobotswe said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the chiefs and people had undertaken a cleanup exercise at Teshie Landing Beach in Accra.

He said the Education and Development Committee would create a fund to support children of school going-age, the Health and Sanitation Committee would ensure strict adherence to hygiene and environmental cleanliness, and the Poverty Alleviation and Wealth Creation Committee would look at avenues of mobilising resources to support the projects.

The Cultural Modernisation Committee would review the cultural practices such as funeral and naming ceremonies to cut down cost and the Traditional Arbitration Committee would handle disputes among the citizenry.

Nii Kwaobotswe said: “Since the death of Nii Ashikwei Akomfra III in 1985 followed by the long chieftaincy litigation as to who the legitimate successor was, development of Teshie has curtailed.”

He said the situation had deprived the community of social-amenities while the people faced unemployment and poverty.

“As the saying goes the devil finds work for the idle hand; so the youth have indulged in anti-social activities like the use of hard drugs, hooliganism and what have you.

“The children of school-going age are roaming the beaches while the area lagged behind in development as compared to its neighbours like Nungua and La,” he said.

Nii Kwaobotswe called on all citizens of Teshie both in and outside Ghana to support the chief and his elders to help build the community and make it a better place for current and future generations.
