Accra, July 1, GNA - Market women at the old La market, on Monday gleefully began the operation of night market for residents following the restoration of electricity by the Member of Parliament (MP), Nii Amasah Namoale.
From his MP common fund, Nii Namoale voted 1,000 Ghana cedis, which was used to rewire the market and install energy saving bulbs to provide the amount of illumination required for the market women to sell their wares after 1800hours.
For over ten years, the market women operated without electricity relying on the traditional naked lamps (Osono and lanterns) to sell their goods.
Commissioning the light, Nii Namoale expressed regret that Government's promise nearly eight years ago to transform the market into a modern market complex has not been fulfilled.
He noted that instead, Government provided the market women with some sheds, something far from the promised it made to them. Nii Namoale said the market structure as it stood now, does not befit the area, since La forms the heart of the Dadekotopon Constituency and the centre of business activities.
"The whole structure is dilapidated and needed to be rehabilitated, but the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under Professor Evans Atta Mills will not sit unconcern.
"As the MP, I have discussed the matter with Prof. Mills and has assured me that, the original design for market complex will see the light of day when elected into office in the December 2008 elections," Nii Namoale said.
The market women expressed their appreciation to the MP for coming to their aid and indicated that, the absence of light in the market has really been a source of great worry to them.
They note that not only has it affected their sales over the years but also created a sense of insecurity for their goods that have suffered a number burglaries in the past.
