Nine persons have been killed in a gory road accident that occurred on Tuesday night at Nsapor, near Berekum in the Brong Ahafo Region.
Several others have sustained live-threatening injuries and have been admitted to various hospitals receiving medical treatment.
ASP Lydia Acheampong Ntow, Officer-in-charge of the Berekum Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, confirmed to DAILY GUIDE that seven of the victims died on the spot while the other two also died on Wednesday morning at the Berekum Holy Family Hospital.
Five of the deceased are women while four are men including a three-year-old baby boy. The bodies have been deposited at the same hospital.
The police officer said three of the injured, who are in critical conditions, had been rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi while five person were on admission at the Holy Family Hospital at Berekum as of the time of filing this report.
ASP Acheampong Ntow informed DAILY GUIDE that the incident occurred around 7pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 when the Ford Transit mini bus with registration number BA 545 Z carrying traders from the Dormaa Ahenkro market to Berekum drove straight into a broken down Kia truck registered AS 4049-10, which was loaded with sewn wood.
The incident occurred at a place which is a few minutes drive from Berekum around the ABTS Company.
DAILY GUIDE gathered from the scene of the accident that the driver of the Ford Transit mini bus, who is among the few survivors, was said to be driving at top speed and came so close to the stationary Kia truck.
According to reports, he failed to turn to the other lane because of an oncoming car.
Residents claimed the driver, who did not know what to do at that moment, drove straight into the broken-down truck killing nine of the people onboard the vehicle.
