Nkawie (Ash), Oct 21, GNA- The Nkawie sub-traditional council in collaboration with the Atwima District Assembly last Friday honoured teachers of the Nkawie District Assembly Experimental School in recognition of the school's high academic performance. All the 18 teachers each received a wall clock plus undisclosed amounts of money.
The school has for the past two years consistently maintained its academic performance with about 96 per cent of the pupils obtaining aggregate six in the 2003 and 2004 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Charles Yeboah, Atwima District Chief Executive, noted that the achievement of the school was an indication that with the provision of adequate infrastructure, equipment and motivation of teachers, the standard of education could be improved immensely.
It was in recognition of this, he said, that the government had initiated new education reforms that would reverse the low standard of education in the country.
Mr Yeboah advised schools in the district to emulate the experimental school to justify the huge investment the government and the assembly were investing in the education sector. Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, the District Director of Education, said the district placed 15 in this year's BECE nationwide whereas it placed 25th last year.
He attributed the low performance of some schools at the BECE to poor supervision, laziness and apathy of some teachers and called for a change of attitude.
Mr Obeng-Darko said the honour done the teachers was a challenge to them to perform even better this year and advised parents to invest in their children's education.
Nana Twum Barima Apau III, Nkawiehene, who presided, commended the teachers for their high academic performance and achievement and urged them to sustain and improve it.
A reception was later held for the teachers.
