Nkoranza (B/A), July 18, GNA - Mr Ebenezer Asare-Baah, Nkoranza District Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has assured that the leadership of the Association would unify the rank and file of members to promote peace, unity and understanding.

Mr Asare-Baah stressed that the major challenges facing GNAT was "infighting, mistrust of the leadership, as well as the lack of free-flow of information and agitation on salary negotiations by members".

He was addressing a GNAT delegates' conference at Victory Presbyterian Church, at Nkoranza, at which new executive members were elected.

It was under the theme: 93GNAT Achievements, Challenges and the Way Forward".

Mr Asare-Baah said misunderstandings among some GNAT members during the leadership's negotiations for better working conditions, under the Single Spine Salary Structure, called for better communication with all members.

He suggested that the leadership of the Association should undertake a nation-wide tour to interact with members for a peaceful dialogue in all issues and to bury their differences.

On achievements, the GNAT secretary said the association ensured the re-introduction of allowance for teacher-trainees, the registration of the association as a trade union and the acquisition of a Collective Bargaining Certificate and the empowerment of GNAT for legal services.

Mr Asare-Baah described GNAT as a vibrant association with international recognition and called on members to forge ahead in unity and to support its growth.

Mr Abubakari Ankomah, Nkoranza District Chairman of the Association advised members not to agitate over the monthly dues and contributions they make to the association since the funds were used in running the Association for their welfare.

He urged the executives of the association to ensure regular interaction with members, to enable them to be abreast with issues and in turn inform colleagues to avoid rumours and gossips.

Mr Isaac Agyare, Nkoranza Local GNAT Secretary congratulated the new executives and urged them to work hard to improve the fortunes of the association.

The elected executives were Mr Patrick Opoku, Chairman, Mr Peter Bekaab, Vice-Chairman, Mr James Diyori, Secretary and Madam Millicent Opoku Fosuaa, Treasurer.
