Nkoranza (B/A) Feb. 4, GNA - Mr Thomas Okyere, a personnel at the Nkoranza District Fire Station, has expressed concern about the devastation of large hectares of arable lands at Mpem, Nyinase, Jerusalem, Dromankese, Dromankuma and Asekye-Krukese communities through by bushfires.

He attributed the rampant outbreak of bushfires in the District to smokers who carelessly leave butts on dry bushes.

Mr Okyere who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency, expressed concern that some people were still causing bushfires despite the persistent educational campaigns against the practice.

He called on assembly members, unit committees and the traditional authorities to encourage local fire volunteers to combat the bushfires. In a related development, Nana Badu Boahen, Akyeasehene (Sub-Chief) of Domeabra, near Nkoranza and Chairman of the Community Fire Volunteers Squad has cautioned the youth against group hunting, which he said led to the setting of bushfires.
