Obuasi (Ash), March 10, GNA - The New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not want any Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) staff to use his or her normal duty hours to campaign for the Party, Mr Joe Boampong, Adansi West District Chief Executive, has said.

"I do not expect any NFED staff to do politics for NPP, neither would I expect you to do politics for NDC and any other Party", he stressed.

Inaugurating the Adansi West District Awareness Creation Committee (DACC) of the NFED on Tuesday, Mr Boampong said in the past the Division was seen as a political wing of the ruling Government. He, therefore, charged the Committee to perform for people to know that the NFED is not an appendage of any political party. Mr Boampong suggested to the NFED to target the youth, who were on the streets and were not attending school.

The District Chief Executive observed that it was only when those who dropped out of school or had not attended school at all were made to become somewhat literate that they could become productive for the nation.

"Ghana will become the winner if NFED works well," Mr Boampong said and called for effective collaboration in reducing illiteracy in the District.

Miss Hectoria Boadi, District NFED Co-ordinator, said one of their objectives was to work to improve the lives of illiterate adults, especially women in the rural areas.

She stressed the importance of NFED and added that, as at 1997 when the first phase of the literacy programme ended, illiteracy rate had reduced from 69 per cent to 52 per cent.

Miss Boadi said it was to encourage and strengthen the programme that the Committee had been formed.

Mr Emmanuel K. Antwi, District Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), who presided emphasised the need for the staff to operate according to the ethics of the organisation. The formation of the 10-member Committee forms part of strategies of NFED towards the enhancement of the Division's programmes and participation.
