No more open defecation on our beaches – Adina residents

The chiefs and people of Adina in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have resolved to cease open defecation along their coastline.

The coastline of the Adina, a large fishing community, has over the years been the defecation centre of the people due to lack of public toilet in the community.

Other residents have also been using the coastline as dumping site where refuse from the various household are left daily.

But the chiefs and the people having realised the consequence of their actions, including the likelihood of a disease outbreak, have decided to cease defecating and dumping refuse along the beaches.

They have therefore called on the district assembly to provide the community with places of convenience for use by the residents in the area.

The Volta Region Chairman of Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council, Torgbui Abotsi warned the laws would be applied should anyone be found defecating along the coastline.

Meanwhile, a social intervention organization, New Genesis Group, has constructed and handed over a ten-seater water closet toilet facility to help the people in their drive to stop open defecation.

It has a bathroom, storeroom and a special place for the physically challenged.

The provision of the facility aims at discouraging the continuous open defecation and dumping of rubbish along the Adina beach, the organisation has said.

The President of New Genesis Group, Daniel Mensah, explained open defecation should be a thing of the past with the provision of a place of toilet facility.
