Amanase, Sept. 10, GNA - Nana Baffuor Asare II, Chief of Amanase, has denied media report that 24 people died in the town after drinking contaminated water from the Abesue stream.
He said residents of Amanase do not drink water from that stream because the community has three boreholes, which serve as sources of water.
Nana Asare denied the report when the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi and the District Chief Executive for Suhum Kraboa Coaltar, Mr Samuel Kwabi Fleischer, visited the area to ascertain the validity of the report.
The chief explained that the Okyehene banned the burial of corpses for some time, and when that ban was lifted, many corpses were buried hence the increase in the number of burials recently.
Nana Asare said there was unsanitary condition in the community because a refuse dump was located near the market, and called on the Assembly to solve the problem.
Alhaji Hudu Alhassan, a government appointee of Suhum Kraboa Coaltar Assembly, who was reported to have given the information to the media, disassociated himself from the story,saying, “That was not what I told the reporter”.
Mr Terlabi advised journalists to always cross check their facts before writing their stories to avoid misinforming the public.
Mr Samuel Agyemang, District Director of the Health Services, said deaths recorded in the area did not have any link with contaminated water from the stream adding that the area did not record any cholera case recently
