Accra, Sept. 5, GNA - The Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education has organised a number of Fun Games at the week-end to climax this year's International Literacy Day, which falls of September 8.

Charles Darlington Afare, Acting Director of NFED said the games, which took place last Saturday, at the Accra Technical Training Centre forms part of the many activities lined up to mark the Day, which is under the theme "Functional Illiteracy, a key to job creation and poverty reduction." "The games are to sensitize the public on the harmful effects of illiteracy in the country and the need for all to put our energies and resources together to reduce it to the barest minimum." Mr Afare said the Fun Games also served as a platform to showcase the positive side of adult literacy and also strengthen the relationship between their partners as well.

The Acting Director also said it is envisaged that the games will aid in building the physical capacities of the staff ahead of challenges in the not too distant future.

The Fun Games drew participation from NFED Headquarters, Ministry of Education, the Cadet Corps and NFED Greater Accra. The teams took part in disciplines such as Sack race, Lime and Spoon, Tug of War, Football, Athletics, Ludo, Draught and Scrabble amongst others.
