Nona Graceland School lined up a number of activities to celebrate Ghana @62 and has climaxed the celebrations with a Traditional Cooking Contest.
The school’s celebration of the Ghana Month is in line with Ghana’s 62nd Independence Anniversary celebration.
The celebrations took off with the “know your heroes” sessions which sought to give the students an exposure to key personalities who played key roles in Ghana’s history.
The Big Six (Ebenezer Ako-Adjei – founding member of the UGCC, Edward Akufo-Addo – founding member of the UGCC/ former President of Ghana, Joseph Boakye Danquah – founding member of the UGCC, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah – Prime Minister of Ghana and first president of Ghana, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey – founding member of the UGCC and William Ofori Atta – founding member of the UGCC), Past Presidents and our sitting President (H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo), Yaa Asantewaa among others, were key names the students learnt about.
The next major activity was the Independence Parade organized by the Education Unit of the Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly, Accra. The colorful event saw students of Nona Graceland School Smartly appareled and soldering on with other participating Schools.
The next major activity which followed was the “Ghana Songs” Session where local songs which bring our great history to mind were taught and sung. This was aimed at deepening the loyalty of staff and students of Nona Graceland School towards their Motherland. Yen ara Asase Ni, Agyanom mmo!, Ghana Nyigba, Ma ?man yi ho nhia wo are some of the songs celebrated.
The celebration was climaxed with the Traditional Cooking Contest which saw 5 Regions keenly contesting among each other. Staff and students were grouped into Greater Accra Region, Ashanti Region, Bonoahafo Region, Northern Region and the Volta Region. Each Region prepared local delicacies within a given time. After a heated contest, the Judges crowned the Greater Accra Region as winners. They scored the highest mark based on table setting, taste of food (starter, main meal and dessert).
Speaking to the C.E.O. of Nona Graceland School, Mrs. Comfort Tetteh Nanor, the success of the Ghana Month Celebrations has been due to the collective and innovative efforts of the Staff, dedication of the Students as well as support from Parents. “We believe our Children must not be ordinary citizens, rather, citizens who know their history and must be proud to be Ghanaians”, Mrs. Tetteh Nanor said.
On the Traditional Day Cooking contest, Mrs. Tetteh Nanor mentioned that it’s objective was to encourage the students learn how to help at home by giving help to each other as they prepared their meals. We saw some of the children helping their friends to fix their aprons better. We also saw some helping their friends peel vegetables. Some of them also helped with grinding and blending. By doing this, they learn to offer help to friends and family as they grow. We also aimed at making the children see and feel what ingredients are used in preparing various meals in the kitchen. “From now Parents should expect children to follow them to the kitchen and offer a helping hand at home because we have stirred up their interest to support at home”. She continued.
Mrs. Tetteh Nanor emphasised the need to organize such extra-curricular activities in schools. In her words, “these activities contribute to fixing the foundation of our society. It will help us raise fully baked individuals who will make up a holistic society, rather than a society where everyone is in haste therefore has no time for family or even self, and always going after quick meals. Learning through the process, enjoying healthy home cooked meals and building healthy team work and competitions will contribute immensely to making a great Nation.
Ghana @62 celebrations at Nona Graceland School is one of the ways the School’s Leadership and Staff seek to groom their students. The success of these activities can only give members of the Nona Graceland community an idea of what is next to come.
