Rehabilitation works on the Sakumono Village intersection and the Nungua barrier road which is part of the Accra-Tema beach road has been completed to facilitate the movement of people and goods in that corridor.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Stephen Attipoe, Tema Metropolitan Urban Roads Engineer, said that what informed the repair of the 3.4 kilometre road was the high level of deterioration and the discomfort that motorists go through as well the dangers exposed to commuters.

Mr. Attipoe said the other consideration for the rehabilitation of the road was the rate at which heavy duty trucks were using the Sakumono Estate inner roads which also posed grave danger to the residents.

He said the 3.4km road was constructed with an asphalt overlay and was designed to fit into a dual carriage road fixture which would come on stream soon, adding that, the contract for the expansion has been awarded to a locally based company, USSUYA, which was also working on the Spintex road.

He disclosed that government is sourcing for funds from the China Development Bank (CDB) to enable them to convert the 5.4 km Community Three (3) traffic lights to the Nungua barrier road into a dual carriage.

He said the coastal protection works by AMANDI on the Sakomono beach would also create more space for an expansive and well protected road.

He advised motorists to drive with caution, and that, his outfit has contingency plans to ensure that the road was maintained regularly.

Mr. Attipoe said his outfit will also provide speed calming facilities like speed ramps, rumble strips and all the needed demarcation, especially at the Buena Vista Estate Junction, to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Speaking to some commercial drivers on Tuesday morning, they expressed their appreciation for the rehabilitation of the road which has resulted in a drastic reduction of travel time between Accra and Tema.
