Obuasi, Nov. 20, GNA - The Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA) has entered into an agreement with three private contractors to construct a 28-seater water closet toilet each in three communities. The facilities, which are to be managed under Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis, are expected to be completed within four months. The beneficiary communities are Anto Obuasi, JJ and New Nsuta, all suburbs of Obuasi.

Mr Joseph Boampong, Municipal Chief Executive, who announced this at the third sessional meeting of the Assembly at Obuasi, said the idea was to help improve sanitation in the municipality. He said the contractors would operate the facilities for ten years before handing them over to the Assembly. The MCE said the Assembly had proposed to install litterbins at strategic points to encourage the citizenry to help keep the municipality clean.

Mr Boampong said over the years, the efficient management of liquid and solid waste had been the Assembly's nightmare and that the assembly was considering outsourcing refuse collection to the private sector in order to focus more on supervising. "Whereas the Assembly is considering this option, we want to do due diligence and arrive at a decision that will not only be cost effective but at the same time safeguard our position as the neatest municipality in the country", he said.
