Anaji (W/R) May 8 -GNA-The occupants of new Effia-Anaji Low cost Houses on Monday said they appreciated the government's decision to sell the houses to them but they find the prices and the terms of payment of the houses unfavourable.
In a statement issued by the occupants and signed by Mr. Godfrey Nyanney, their spokesman at the weekend, they appealed to the government to reduce the prices of the houses and review the terms of payment.
The occupants who are civil and public servants and pensioners said they find prices of the houses too high and the period of payment "too short".
They said that houses containing two rooms and a hall cost 66 million cedis while those containing one room and a hall cost 39,600,000 cedis. They said twenty per cent of the cost should be paid within one month from date of offer and the remaining amount settled in three monthly installments.
The occupants said they have been responsible for the repairs and maintenance of the houses since they took occupancy in 1975.
They said in view of the current level of salaries in the country, it would be difficult for them to raise 10 million cedis to 17 million cedis to pay for the houses.
"We, therefore, humbly appeal to the father of the nation, President Kufuor to intervene and ensure that the Ministry of Water Resource, Works and Housing either reduces the prices or the period of payment to spread over at least five years to commensurate with our salaries so as to feel comfortable with the terms of payment", the occupants added. 08 May 07
