The Old Abirem Community Football team has won this year’s Newmont Akyem Independence Day football Gala trophy.
They defeated the Afosu community team, 4-3 on penalties in the annual Independence Day Football Gala Competition organized by the Newmont Akyem project for nine communities in its operation area.
The winners were presented with a magnificent silver trophy, an amount of GHC150.00 and a football with the runners up - Afosu, receiving a trophy, GHC100.00 and a football.
Ntronang community team defeated Yaayaso 3-2 also on penalties for the third place match and also received GHC70.00 and a football whiles Yaayaso which placed fourth received GHC50.00.
The other teams which included New Abirem, Mamanso, Adausena Hweakwae, Yaw Tano and a team from Newmont received a football each as their prize.
The Senior Communications Officer of Newmont Akyem Project, Mr Kingsley Kumi Asare in an address said it was the eighth annual Independence Day Football Gala being organized by the company for the communities to bring the people in the area together irrespective of their race, colour, ethnicity and other differences.
He commended the Birim North District Assembly, the Chiefs, Assembly Members, Unit Committees, youth leaders, team managers and all the community members for their unflinching support during the past eight years.
The District Chief Executive, Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong said sports played an important role and enhanced unity and development and urged the youth to develop their talents to produce top football players for the District.
