The 1963 Year Group of the Old Achimotans Association (OAA) has handed over a refurbished Science Laboratory Block to the management of the school as part of activities to mark the Association's 50th Anniversary and the 86th Founders Day Celebration of the school.

The laboratory was refurbished to an Advance Science Complex (ASC), which now has various modules such as Physics Chemistry “A” Laboratories and its offices, Physics Chemistry and Biology “B” Laboratories and its offices, Biology “A” Junior Laboratory, Audio Visual Hall and External works, Water Supply Storage System, Generator Set and Gas Cages.

The Audio-Visual Hall also has a projector, DVD equipment, Sonny television set connected to multi television and PC networking.

The celebration is under the theme: “Repositioning Science at Achimota School for Ghana’s Competitiveness in the 21st Century”.

Reverend Dr Joyce Aryee, Class President of the Group, said: “Out of the worthy needs of the school, we have chosen to develop a vision for an advance science complex to support the teaching and learning of science in the school.”

She said that the theme was chosen to reflect the changing role of science in modern society and to contribute to the strengthening of teaching and learning of science in order to make the school globally competitive in science education.

Rev. Dr Aryee said the approach was to enable the realization of the ASC in an orderly manner over a period of time and that contributors at each stage were encouraged and guided to select what module they might be in position to implement, consistent with the overall vision of the ASC.

Mrs Beatrice Adom, Headmistress of the School, said the structure was in a dilapidated state and that the rehabilitation had raised the standard of the laboratory to a state of the art facility.

She said no one was doing better than the 1963 Year Group year group towards the contribution of the development of the school and thanked the group for their commitment towards ensuring the success of the school.

Mrs Adom thanked all Alumni of the school and appealed to other year groups to help build and maintain the school's image and standard it had attained over the years.
