Old Tafo Al-Azhariya SSS embarks on 5.6 billion cedis project

Kumasi, June 8, GNA- The Azhariya Senior Secondary School (SSS) at Old Tafo in Kumasi, has embarked on the construction of a three-storey building that will cost 5.6 billion cedis. The Islamic Development Bank in Jedah, Saudi Arabia is funding the project, which includes the construction of administration block, classrooms, library, stores, science laboratory, offices and a computer centre.

Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed, Director of the SSS, made these known when he led journalists to inspect work on the building in Kumasi on Thursday.

He said the project was at an advanced stage and that so far about 2.4 billion cedis had been spent on it. Sheikh Mohammed said the school made up of kindergarten, primary, junior secondary school and SSS has a total enrolment of over 1,500 pupils and students and 50 teachers and non-teaching staff. Sheikh Mohammed, who is also the Ashanti Regional Imam of the Al-Sunna Muslim sect, said efforts were being made to revive the school's Parent-Teacher Association to enable it assist in the development of the school.

He praised the government for absorbing the school into the public school system and appealed to parents to provide their children with education materials to enhance their learning. Sheikh Mohammed announced that the primary school section had been included in the school feeding programme, and expressed the hope that it would soon take-off. He appealed to individuals, organisations and government to assist the school with classrooms and means of transport. 8 June 07
