Residents of Old Tafo, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region are calling on the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to review the curfew hours imposed on the community to enable them celebrate this year’s 2016 Easter festivities.
Residents accused security personnel stationed in the community of manhandling them during night hours including children and the aged.
One person died and several others sustained various degree of injuries following violent clashes between Muslim youth and traditional authorities of Old Tafo.
The Interior Ministry reviewed the curfew hours from 8:pm to 4:am on Wednesday, March 23, 2016.
The earlier curfew which started 6:pm to 6:am was a decision taken by the REGSEC.
The renewal comes in the wake of reports that the town was calm, but residents complained that the curfew is affecting their businesses.
Ultimate Fm’s Isaac Bediako in an interview with some of the residents indicated that their daily activities have been halted due to the curfew.
A resident Habila Mohammed who lives in a compound house which has no toilet facility complained that security personnel prevent them from visiting nature’s call.
‘The challenges that we are facing is that when I travel and get to Kejetia around 8:pm, I have to sleep there, because if I try to go home, they will not allow me enter my house, either they will beat or sack me from the vicinity. We have been defecating in rubber bags, because the soldiers do not allow us to visit the public toilet, our rooms are always smelling,’ he bemoaned.
