PMs of Tamale commended for cooperating with Assembly

Tamale, Feb. 6, GNA - Mr. Abraham Dwuma Odoom Deputy Ministry of Local Government Rural Development and Environment (MLGRDE) has commended the three Members of Parliament (MPs) for Tamale for working in harmony with Tamale Metropolitan Assembly even though coming from the opposition NDC.

He cited the electricity, which he said, functions on both positive and negative combination and urged managements of the assembly, Assembly members and PMs to give due recognition to each other to enhance the rapid development of the metropolis.

He announced that his Ministry would organise a unity workshop for Assembly members, District Chief Executives and MPs to educate them on their roles and functions to ensure unity of purpose in the assemblies. Mr. Odoom made the commendation at the first and second meeting of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly in Tamale on Monday. He urged stakeholders in the Assembly to select city development strategies to promote harmonious development in the cities, lamenting that since independence, there had not been urban development policy to address issues of sanitation.

He said financing the cities had been inadequate to meet the development needs and aspirations of the people and that his Ministry was discussing with the Ministry of Finance for alternative ways of financing the cities.

Mr. Odoom announced that a "Municipal Financing Policy" would soon be implemented to take charge of financing of development projects in the cities.

The three MPs, Alhaji Abukari Sumani, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini and Haruna Iddrisu in their remarks bemoaned the insurgence of the guinea worm disease in the Northern Region.

They promised to continue to use their share of the District Assemblies Common Fund and other resources due them to provide potable water for the people as a measure to eradicate the disease.

The MPs appealed to the Metro Assembly to desilt all dams in the communities which were almost dried up to provide water for the people, saying, "This should be done fairly without political considerations". On peace, the MPs called on all stakeholders in Dagbon, the government and security agencies to play their roles well to ensure that sustainable peace was obtained. 06 Feb. 07
