The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has condemned demonstrations staged by some consumers in Accra against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over the load-shedding irregularities.

According to the Commission, resorting to violence is not the way to go.

The different demonstrations in Lapaz-Tabora and Odorkor - both suburbs of Accra - led to the vandalism of property belonging to ECG.

“Violence is not the way to go,” PURC’s Public Relations and External Affairs Director Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah said on TV3’s Midday Live on Monday.

She mentioned as the cause of the recent frequent power outages, the application of an automatic frequency load mechanism (AFLM), which makes sure lights go out immediately there is a shortfall in supply, she explained.

Ms Jantuah said these should have been communicated to consumers by the utility companies.

“The main issue we have found out on the ground is lack of communication,” she observes.

She called for calm on the part of consumers and advised the utility companies especially ECG to make more complaint lines available in order to up communication.
