Parents express concern over unauthorized fees

Akim Asamamah (E/R), April 18, GNA - There is growing tension at Akim Asamamah near Akim Abomosu in the Atiwa District as parents of pupils in the Local Authority Junior Secondary School (JSS) have expressed concern about allegation that teachers in the school have collected unauthorized fees from the pupils.

By the recent government education policy, management of public schools are not supposed to collect fees from the pupils but to run their schools on the capitation grants provided by the government. A spokesperson for the worried parents, Madam Vida Amponsah, told the Ghana News Agency that the teachers had collected 18,000 cedis from pupils in JSS 3 as printing fees.

She said such actions of the teachers defeated the aim for the introduction of the capitation grant.

Another parent, Madam Abena Boadiwaa, said parents had reported the case to the Chairman of the School's Parent/Teacher Association (PTA), Mr John Boafo, and the assembly member of the community, Mr Otchere Frimpong, but no action had been taken.

In the light of such developments, she said, they have decided to bring the issue to the attention of the Atiwa District Chief Executive and the District Education Office.
