Pedu Corporative Union threatens demonstration

Cape Coast, Oct. 6, GNA - Members of the Pedu Junction long Distance Corporative Transport Society have threatened to demonstrate if the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) failed to move out a rival transport union from their station of operation.

The Chairman of the Society, Mr. Ohene Gyan Ntim told the Ghana News Agency in Cape Coast on Wednesday that they acquired their current lorry station at the Pedu Junction from the CCMA. He said after investing so much into the land, another transport company, the Inter-Country Transport Union of Ghana, had encroached upon their land creating problems for the Society's members. Mr Ntim said the members of the Society were being attacked both verbally and physically by the rival members on daily basis and sometimes fight over passengers.

He said if CCMA failed to do something about the situation it would hamper peaceful operations at the lorry station. According him, the executives of the Society had to calm down tempers of members today Wednesday to stop them from embarking on a demonstration. Meanwhile, he said, the CCMA, a month ago, set up a committee to investigate the rightful occupant of the lorry park after which the Assembl= y pleaded with the Society to allow the other transport company to continue t= o operate there until they were relocated. The Chairman said his outfit agreed to that arrangement but later received a letter from the Central Regional Police Commander, who invited him to a meeting and advised that the two transport bodies take turns to load passengers at the lorry station.

He said even though that did not go down well with them, they allowed it but noted that the Inter-Country Union was always engaging in confrontation with them. This he added was affecting their business. Mr. Ntim therefore pleaded with CCMA to act fast in getting the Inter-Country Transport Union a park of its own to forestall any possible confusion. Efforts by the GNA to contact executives of Inter-Country Transport Union proved futile.
