Pentecost University launches 10th Anniversary celebration

The Pentecost University College (PUC), Ghana has launched its 10th Anniversary on the theme: “A Decade of Excellence”.

The PUC aims at empowering students to serve their own generation and posterity with integrity and the fear of God.

Events to mark the celebration from October to December include “a health walk, blood donation exercise and a medical outreach in October.

There will be a clean -up exercise, public lecture, an anniversary service in November, fundraising dinner, alumni homecoming/ musical concert, graduation and climaxing it with a thanksgiving service in December.

Speaking at a news conference in Accra, Professor Kwame Boasiako Omane- Antwi, Vice Rector and Dean of Pentecost University College Graduate School (PUCGS) recounted that, 10 years ago, the leadership of the Church of Pentecost, under the Chairmanship of Apostle Dr Michael Kwabena Ntumy, took a courageous and visionary decision to establish the University College, upgrading it from the Pentecost Bible College.

He further quoted Apostle Dr Opoku Onyinah, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, the first Rector and Current Chancellor of PUC in a speech read on his behalf at the sixth congregation, saying “when the decision was taken to upgrade the Bible School of the Church, scarcely did we envisage that today, PUC will be among the leading non-state Universities in the country”.

The Vice Rector and Dean of PUCGS noted that, the aim was to empower and produce men and women, who work with hands, heads and hearts to the glory of God.

Professor Omane- Antwi said as much as we all worked towards improving standards of higher education in the country, there was also a need to focus on ‘Graduates with Character’, adding that “our country is in dire need of men and women of integrity who will not add to the corruption and poor work ethics that make a mockery of our laws and governance systems”.

He said this had been the agenda of the University College over the past decade with regards to its flagship programmes christened “Mentorship and College Assembly”.

The Vice Rector and Dean of PUCGS explained that PUC Mentorship programme was established to impact the lives of students both spiritually and academically; with prepared handbooks under the leadership of experts to equip students with personal organizational and leadership skills throughout their time at the University and afterwards.

Prof Omane- Antwi said the College Assembly affords students the opportunity to hear from prominent people on various topics.

As part of the Anniversary celebrations, in line with its social corporate responsibility, Prof Omane- Antwi said a number of projects had been outlined for the Sowutuom Community, where a one kilometer stretch of road christened University Road, linking the Sowutuom Main Street and PUC Campus had been rehabilitated in June this year.

The rest are a Medical Outreach on October 17 and 24, and the commissioning of two mechanized bore-hole projects in December; all these projects are estimated to cost GH? 300, 000.

Moreover PUC had offered a 10 per cent scholarship to all fresh students, a $ 1000 scholarship to students, who have enrolled in their various programmes at PUGCS, staff of the Ghana Revenue Authority as well as judges, who were interested in studying taxation related programmes.

Touching on the future of PUC; the Vice Rector and Dean of PUCGS revealed that in the next ten years, Management will add up Graduate and Undergraduate programmes in Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Fire Science.

He said this was aimed at expanding the frontiers of the two new fully accredited engineering programmes such as BSc. Construction Technology and Engineering Management, and BSc. Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics, as well as the health and allied sciences programmes.

In another development, as part of its 10 year strategic plan; the Graduate School under the deanship of Prof Omane-Antwi offers various Master’s Degree programmes in; MCom Taxation, MCom Applied Accounting, MCom Microfinance, MBA Human Resource Management, MBA Logistics and Supply Chain Management, MBA Entrepreneurship, MBA Marketing.

The rest are MBA Project Management, MA Pentecostal Studies and MSc International Accounting and Finance (is a collaborative programme with the Buckinghamshire New University, UK).
