Students of Pong Tamale Senior High School in the Savelugu-Nanton municipal assembly have been forced to sleep in toilet cubicles due to lack of space in the dormitories.

The situation is forcing the students to share lodgings with their peers. The new boys’ dormitory which housed close to 350 male students is a 12-unit facility with toilet and bathrooms built under the GETFUND.

Starr News checks revealed that each room accommodates about 50 students who struggle for sleeping space with their 'chop' boxes and other belongings.

When Starr News visited the school, we found out that as a result of lack of proper accommodation, some students resort to sleeping in the open compound while others sleep in the abandoned toilet cubicles.

“Our dormitory is too small for the accommodation of the students, some of us are lying, they built a flushing toilet and there is no water so we opened it for students to be staying in because all the rooms are choked,” the General Prefect of the boys’ dormitory Yaaka Iddrisu told Starr News.

According to him, some of the students have to scour for places to rent despite paying for dormitory fees.

The Pong Tamale Senior High School is supposed to enroll a maximum of 500 students, but the computerized selection system has forced authorities to take up to 850.

Lack of water has also been another issue confronting the school. Starr News understands the taps flow once in every three weeks.

The deputy senior house master, Azong Adams told Starr News there is little the school could do about the situation.

“You have to ask the headmistress, that is what we have found ourselves in so we have to manage what we have,” Azong responded.
