Physically challenged to build hostel

Nkoranza (B/A) Oct. 17, GNA - Members of the Nkoranza branch of the Society of the Physically Challenged would mobilize resources GH70,000 to construct a hostel and a workshop for the training of the youth in vocational skills and trades.

Mr. Effah Guakro, president of the Society, told the Ghana News Agency, at Nkoranza that the society had a temporary workshop where they trained people in dressmaking, shoe-making, and electronics.

He said a number of members had acquired employable skills and become self-sufficient with improved livelihoods, whilst some female members were engaged in hair-dressing.

Those who lack vocational skills have been provided with funds to trade.

"We don't encourage the practice of alms taking or begging by the roadside by our members, hence our plans to get a permanent workshop to train our people in employable skills," Mr. Guakro added.

The president called on the Nkoranza North and South District Assemblies, NGOs, philanthropists, corporate bodies and well-to-do individuals to consider their plight and go to their aid.

Mr. Annor Kudom, treasurer of the society, also appealed to the two Members of Parliament in Nkoranza, Mr. Kwame Amporfo-Twumasi and Major Derek Yaw Oduro (rtd), to support society.

He disclosed that the society had enrolled some children with various disabilities in the special schools and was offering them the necessary support.

Meanwhile, the National Biennial Conference of members of the Society of the Physically Challenged is scheduled to take place in Sunyani next year.
