Nkoranza (B/A) Aug. 2, GNA - Members of Nkoranza District branch of Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled have elected a seven-member district executive committee to steer the affairs of the society for three years.
The Committee members were Mr. Effah Guakro, district chairman, Mr. Simon Wiafe, vice chairman, Mr. Richard Zieman, secretary and Mr. Kusi Yeboah, treasurer.
Others were Mr. Hayford Ameyaw, public relations officer, Mr. Matthew Kodom Annor, financial secretary and Miss Abena Serwaa, women's organizer.
Mr. Benjamin Amofa, Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the Society,who swore them into office urged them to co-operate with and support the leaders to initiate programmes that would help improve their living standards.
He called on the leaders to respect the committee members and listen to their views so that they could initiate and undertake development programmes for their benefit.
Mr. Amofa advised the disabled to shun alcoholism, smoking and illicit sexual practices.
Mr. Effah Guakro, District Chairman, expressed gratitude to the members and gave the assurance to serve them well and ensure the growth of the society.
He urged his colleagues to work and earn a living and to desist from begging for alms by the roadsides and other public places. Mr. Effah expressed grave concern about the inability of Parliament to expedite action on the disability bill for the past six years and called on the august house to expedite action on it. He advised parents with disabled children to send them to school and never to hide them at home, "since they are equally intelligent as their physically able colleagues".
