Place plain-clothe police at zebra crossings - Branch Chairman

Mpasatia (Ash), March 18, GNA - An executive member of the Mpasatia-Kumasi Local of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has suggested the stationing of plain-clothes Policemen at zebra crossings, particularly those at traffic lights to arrest offending drivers.

He has further suggested severe punishment and the imposition of heavier fines on drivers, who broke traffic regulations and knocked down people as a deterrent.

Mr Kwame Noah, Vice-Chairman of the Mpasatia-Kumasi Local, who made the suggestions noted that the carelessness with which some drivers drive in the Kumasi Metropolis sometimes leading to fatal accidents was becoming a source of worry and must be checked.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi on how to minimise the rampant killing of pedestrians at zebra crossings especially at traffic lights, he noted that some drivers simply refused to stop even when the red light showed.

The result, Mr Noah said was that these drivers in their attempt to speed away from the traffic light, knock down people using the zebra crossing. He, therefore, asked pedestrians to be extremely careful when crossing the streets at zebra crossings under traffic lights.

Mr Noah advised members of his local union to desist from overloading, going more than speed limit and all forms of indiscipline on the roads and always maintain their vehicles to prevent accidents.
