Major works on the proposed ultra-modern market complex for Kotokuraba will begin before the end of the year, Mr. Anthony Egyir Aikins, Mayor of Cape Coast has assured residents.
He debunked rumours that the move was a propaganda action to score political points and explained that it was rather the efforts of the Cape Coast Municipal Assembly (CCMA) to restore the ancient city to its past glory as the nation’s capital.
In an interview with the GNA in Cape Coast on Monday, the Mayor indicated that preparatory works to relocate about 1,600 traders at Kotokuraba to Kotoka, an adjoining Market was in progress.
Prior to the relocation, his outfit had engaged and sensitized the traders on the move, adding that, the traders at the Kotoka market, who have been moved to the GBC area and some lorry stations, have so far cooperated.
He said aside the traders, 12 lorry and four taxi stations at the Kotoka market have also been relocated within the premises of the CCMA, the Tantri lorry station and Friends’ Garden, near the Cape Coast stadium.
Pre-fabricated materials to be used for the mounting of temporary market cubicles will arrive within the next five weeks whilst it will take another two weeks for its installation.**
