An overflowing refuse dump in the Poase Cement market in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region is gradually consuming sheds in the trading centre.

The venue, once a temporary holding place for refuse generated in the market, is now a major dump site for communities in the area.

Fish traders, whose sheds were overrun by the expanding refuse dump, have their produce covered in flies, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the situation was affecting sales but they could not do anything about it.

Flies were seen at all ready to eat food joints and on food products displayed at the market.

A new urinal, built by the Assembly had also been partly submerged in the refuse heap, becoming totally inaccessible.

Madam Saviour Kumahor, District Environmental Health Officer said the Assembly had banned dumping at the site, and that the next action was for the refuse to be evacuated.

She said with the rains setting in, stakeholders would have to expedite action on the situation to prevent the outbreak of sanitation related diseases.

The traders told the GNA that they feared the situation could result in the collapse of the once vibrant and growing market.

Mr Abdul Jafaru Aziz, Kadjebi District Coordinating Director said the Assembly's earth mowing equipment was broken down and that the Assembly was working to surmount the "huge cost" of carting the refuse to an appropriate disposal site.
