The Northern Regional Police Christian Fellowship has supported a 45-year- old widow with GHC 1,100 to enable her to pay her medical bills.
The woman, who hails from Gumani, a community in the Tamale Metropolis, has been diagnosed with Spondylolisthesis/Lumber Canal Stenosis, a condition that makes it very difficult for her to move.
Medical officials describe Spinal stenosis or degenerative spondylolisthesis as back conditions that are caused by the narrowing of the spinal canal.
As people age, these conditions can develop due to the drying out and shrinking of the disc spaces between the bones (80% of the disc is made up of water). Pain is felt at the back or leg when the nerve is pressed and women over 50 are more susceptible than men.
According to the Welfare Department of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, she needs GHC 3, 200.00 to enable her to undergo surgeryl.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mathew Kojo Appiagyei, the Northern Regional Police Commander, led the group to present the donation to the Welfare Department of the hospital on Wednesday in Tamale.
He said the donation was part of the group’s advocacy to support the less privileged in society and appealed to people to give a helping hand to the needy.
On the December Election, he reiterated the need for the public to collaborate with the Police to ensure peace in the country.
Madam Vivien Anyaakuu, Head of the Welfare Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, received the donation on behalf of the widow and thanked the team for the support.
