Bawku, Nov. 18, GNA - Police in Bawku on Wednesday fired shots to stop some youth attacking them after the Bawku District Court had granted bail to one Abdulai Rahaman Sulemana Afoli, a businessman.

The Bawku Circuit Court granted Afoli bail when he appeared before the court on Wednesday charged with offensive conduct. He is accused of causing panic through publishing and circulation of information questioning the legitimacy of the Paramount Chief of Bawku, Naba Abugrago Azoka II.

Afoli was arraigned on November 5 and remanded in police custody has been granted bail and would reappear on November 26. The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Musah Abdulai, told the GNA in an interview that some of the youth, apparently in solidarity with the Paramount Chief, did not take kindly to the judge granting Afoli bail and threw stones at the policemen who fire shots to disperse them. "There were no casualties and there is no problem in Bawku now. The atmosphere is peaceful and people are going about their normal business peacefully."

Mr Abdulai said the government would not compromise with anybody or group of people who would want to drag the progress and gains made so far in Bawku backwards.
