Political instability threatens peace in Bawku

Bawku (U/E) Jan. 31 GNA – Mr Roland Adatuu, a social scientist and political analyst, has said the re-occurrence of acts of violence in the Bawku area was politically motivated and called on political authorities to help ensure that the problem is mitigated.

Mr Adatuu, who is also Director for Youth Link-Ghana, a non governmental organization working to empower the Youth in the Upper East Region, urged Politicians to create platforms that would educate their supporters and sympathizers on the need to stay in a peaceful society.

Over the last nine months, there have been the recurrent cases of burning of houses and valuable properties belonging to supporters and sympathizers of the NDC and NPP by unidentified persons and this has caused fear and panic in the municipality.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bawku, Mr Adatuu entreated the youth not to allow themselves to be used by politicians who had parochial interests.

He said the youth were the driving force of the society and that it was crucial that they conduct themselves in a manner that would not bring about disharmony in the society.

Mr Jacob Gomez Adongo, Bawku Municipal Director for the National Commission for Civic Education, said there was the need for government to focus on the education of the citizenry on political issues in the country to help prevent future disturbances.

He explained that if the citizenry were abreast with political issues they would not fight each other and indicated that supporters of political parties should desist from violence.

Views gathered by the GNA in Bawku indicate that the acts of violence were vengeance from the camps of incumbent Member of Parliament (NPP) Mr Adamu Dramani and the NDC aspiring Member of Parliament, Mr Mahama Ayariga.

Both camps keep pointing the accusing fingers at each other as the cause of the disharmony creating an uneasy situation in the area.
